I’ve been drawing since I could hold a crayon. My parents were both good at it and encouraged me and all my siblings in our artistic endeavors. We’d make a gallery out of our small New York kitchen once in a while—hanging just about anything up with Scotch tape to populate all the walls and of course, the refrigerator. Then we’d invite our parents to the art show.
I love color, especially the tertiary spectrum for some reason. Illustration and painting with real pigment out of tubes is delicious. When I paint, designer’s gouache using dry brush techniques has become my usual thing. I like the textures. The brushwork can resemble Impressionism in its (to borrow a musical term), staccato approach. I find the way color is refracted really interesting. A million years ago I studied with and modeled for a master pastelist whose work was impressionistic and I took it all in though observation and great discussions. Learning to draw fashion models at arm’s length loosened me up. I find facial and body gestures fascinating to try and capture.
But I digress. Sorry.
Anyway… Photoshop also gives me all the dry brushes I need and I’ve been able to achieve similar results as with paint and colored pencils. I mix media sometimes by scanning in a rough color rendering and working it digitally.
